1 Bendice a Yahveh, alma mía. ¡Yahveh, Dios mío, muy grande eres!; De majestad y belleza estás vestido.
2 Envuelto estás de luz como de un manto, despliegas los cielos como lona de tienda;
3 Construyes en las aguas tus altos aposentos; pones las nubes por carroza, caminas sobre las alas del viento;
7 Ante tu amenaza huyen; A la voz de tu trueno se precipitan;
31 Sea la gloria de Yahveh por siempre; Alégrese Yahveh en sus obras;
33 A Yahveh cantaré mientras dure mi vida: A mi Dios celebraré mientras yo viva.
Bendice, alma mía, a Yahveh. Aleluya.

Poetic Morality

Prologue

This book presents the transcription of the master class of the poet Godofredo Iommi M., March 1980, about the Poetic Morality, for the reception of the students at the School of Architecture and Design of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaiso. But above all, this digital edition is dedicated to the voice of the poet; And then together with the transcription of his class we present the original audio, as well as brief notes that try to contextualize or deepen some of the contents exposed by the poet.

The published work of Godofredo Iommi M., until now, consisted in his poems and poetic texts. In these editions of the Archive of the Word we present his classes, speeches or conversations, which he held for more than fifty years in both the School and the Open City. Thus we would like to extend a part of the contents created by a poet whose life, work and study are essential both for those who were participants and still remain part of a poetic people, as for those who are beginning to walk these open routes where they will meet the trades and poetry.

Poetic Morality. The class.

I take as a witness all the other students, from the first year to the tenth stage, to speak specifically to the senior students; those students who are going to graduate, and also to all those who have graduated for the last 28 years. And what I'm going to talk about is poetic morality.

When anyone is told about moral, the first thing that comes to mind is a set of rules, duties to perform and prohibited things to do. And of course, we feel almost instinctively a rebellion. And it is not wrong to think so because it is a false criterion of morality. Morality, which in Greek is called ethos (1), is in substance the opening of being; it is the being that opens. We can speak, in this sense, figuratively, of the ethos of the Universe. That is, the being that opens and expands and for greater lucidity, for greater light, to shine everything that is possible that is contained in it. In order that it may shine all that is possible to be contained in it, immediately, so that it can happen and be multiple and of several people, and of all and many, and of infinite beings that exist and that we do not know, an order is needed. Order means, in Greek, Cosmos. An order is needed. Then, instinctively appears and precisely to be able to open, a rigor (2). Therefore it is not a set of rules; may take that form to memorize it, but the foundation is not there; the foundation is that rigor is inherent in the possibility that shine in all its fullness the being: our, of the Universe and of the things being.

For example. I will give two points of view; The one of the opening and the one of the pleasure. From this point of view [the one of the opening], not stealing, not killing, is not a strict prohibition. It is so little rigorous, that in fact people steal and kill each other. It is about not to prevent something that can be, is to give way to the world. If I kill a life I do not let it be, if I steal something I do not let it be. The foundation of those no, is so that the fullness of each one can shine.

I take another example, do not get scandalized. The pleasure. It is evident that the senses causes pleasure, and that the intellect causes pleasure, and that the free will causes pleasure, and that the memory causes pleasure. It is evident that a good meal, like the one that we are going to have today, causes pleasure. It is obvious that riding on a magnificent motorcycle causes pleasure. And then within the pleasure of the senses is the pleasure of pleasures, which I do not need to name (yes you know) [audience laughter].

Well, all those pleasures are not only legitimate, they are not only real: they are moral. When can a ‘no’ appear? When one does not love in totality to that pleasure. For example: what greater pleasure than living, what greater pleasure then to love my life. But if I love it little, I do not really love the fullness of pleasure (3). As I fully love it and I love it at its best, I can come to think, as the ancients thought and think of all religions, that life is eternal. Then I love life in so far as it is eternal, and insofar as it is eternal I live it with that rigor that allows me access to eternity. Because I love it very much; much more than if it were not eternal, because I do not accept that my life ends; Because it would cause me grief and not pleasure. Then the thirst for infinite pleasure is also the foundation of moral rigor.

Having achieved this scope with respect to the word moral that is fundamentally openness and pleasure, this morality is transmitted and merges with the moral of doing, doing the work. If I intend to have maximum pleasure with doing works I go to the rigor of the work; To the true rigor of the work and nothing –nothing– can betray it. Because if I go down from that rigor I lose pleasure and consequently lose openness; I do not let the work be in its own fullness.

This, in this School, is the ABC. This School, founded many years ago but later refounded, has not only believed in this morality for 28 years; That would not make any sense; It is not a thing in which one believes or one does not believe. As Alberto recently said about observation: it is not an ornament, nor is it a procedure; for the School this is the path of the fullness of the work.

What does a poetic morality mean? Poetic morality means something very clear and transparent. I start from the base that the work is founded on a secret dispute that I have to decipher by the observation. And in the other arts is in another way. But it is a secret dispute that I can not ignore, because if I did not start from that, the work would start from pre-established canons that ensure a good result. That's a way of working completely different from how we work here. Here the work starts from a secret dispute to be deciphered. And what is the rigor? The absolute fidelity, mine, personal, to that secret dispute that I have before. Although I wreck. In the order of this School, shipwreck may mean to get a bad grade, and in the order of work outside means other things, for example misery; not having money to live. This are two extremes. But I do not take a single step, I do not go back a single millimeter...

There was a celebrated phrase of Alberto in a work of thirty years ago, in which he proposed a great assignment here in Achupallas. And he himself considered the difficulties for that to be realized and reached the extreme end where there was not a single peso [money]; That nobody had anything to do anything; That all he had was a worker with a shovel... and then Alberto –you can read it in the library–, took the worker and said –please worker, with the little shovel, cut a little more here the land: But never the architecture betrayed! Never! (4).

This is the moral poetic. You will wonder –and the senior students with more edge, more sharply, because they are about to begin the battle– well, but with that criterion we are all doomed to failure because what we see built up –not only here– in the world, is anything but architecture and because in most trades the situation is conditioned by a certain perversion with respect to the secret dispute that has to be decipher. It is true, completely true.

But we can make a quick balance of the years that we carry in this true bulwark, in this true trench. Approximately 150 architects have graduated from this School. Well, more than a third, more than a third, which is huge, has never ceased to give the battle. And some of them –well, all of them– live and can live from architecture, but none has stopped giving battle; Some more, others less, but a third has given. Not only here but also abroad, also in other countries, remaining faithful to their secret dispute without abandoning it.

What is the ultimate temptation of abandonment? Let's talk clear: money.

Then money, which is wonderful to be able to give way to things, becomes a tombstone that encloses and makes disappear the reason of the being of the trade. But we are convinced, because we have survived, and thanks to that third, that is not true either. It is not true in this way, because it is possible that people who have remained faithful could also live. Of course, having other ambitions than those of money. I explain myself; I'll return to the theory of pleasure. If I do not find pleasure, I do not want to live my pleasure to the death, to the maximum, then I will give up immediately. But if I want to live the pleasure to the maximum of my Work, then all other pleasures are secondary, are minor, are not important. The decisive pleasure is that of this dispute that I have to decipher and bring it to light. And I bring it to light –this I want to refer very clearly and emphasize it especially for the senior students and to tell the graduates, and also for the first year students to know– that it does not matter, it does not matter that it seems to me I would fragment the thing I have done, that it seems to me that I have not succeeded in doing it in its full totality and in its maximum fullness. That does not matter, in the life of art an artist does not every day do the maximum Work. As Picasso said, in truth in the life of art, what interests the artist is the suite of ideas. And in some moments there is the catalysis of this brilliant Work collect everything. What does matter instead? Never the architecture betrayed!

Many times I have wondered something. Sometimes I meet some friends, already older than me –because one stays young in this, right?– who were students and they are rich, and they have not been faithful to their dispute. And they are right, because life is more complex; this is no accusation to anybody, but I have always wondered this: will it be worth an effort of seven or eight years, minimum of average, to study in this School, to go through a series of artistic experiences, to do later what with less time and more fluidity can be done studying in other schools? We want to let there be many schools, and that each one thinks differently, not a single thing.

Well. I will end by inciting to all who will graduate, to give the fight for this fidelity. And if you want, a public fight. It has always struck me that in all these 28 years –as we have never given a fight in manifestos or in any group, maybe that has also influenced all those who graduated– and have not expressed somewhere publicly, visibly, his architectural criterion. In this sense we reaffirm this poetic morality and I think at this moment that we could think, with the Student Center, that at the beginning of the third period, we start for example –it is crazy, but if one does not say crazy things– with a great trip; That we go to see the first wWorks built by the School, after a huge and terrible earthquake, from Puerto Montt coming up, all we have done (5). To see what is a pure architectural battle; Far beyond whether the churches are cute or ugly (which unfortunately is a very good criterion but too much used, as you know, by aunts). [Laughter from the audience].

Now is going to be distribute to you an edition of something that is very dear for the School, that is called the Holiness of the Work.

Anyone who does a good or beautiful work, said St. Ambrose, belongs in its own right to the Holy Spirit. In the language of unbelievers could be the sublime love, or the divinity, is the true owner and true author of any Work that is good or beautiful. This sings psalm 104 of the Bible and has been edited to be kept as a text, if you can, from here until you are the great architects we all hope that you become (6).

From the influence of pleasure and pain on virtue: "and here is where moral virtue takes the name with which it is designated, if it is possible in the very letter of a word to discover the truth and find in it the reality, Half that is perhaps as acceptable as any other. Morality, which in the Greek language is called ethos with long e, also has the denomination of habit, which is also called ethos (with e in lower case), and morality, ethike, is so called in Greek, because it results from habits and Of customs, ethidzesthai. (2) The Great Moral, book first, chapter XVII. "It is necessary that we say to what it is united and to what aspire the virtue. Is it really to the very finality itself? Is it just to the things that lead to it? For example: is it the moral aspire to the good itself? But above all, what does science do at this point? Or science just have to know the means that lead to that end the things that contribute to the good? But above all, what does science do at this point? Does it belong to the science of architecture to define well the purpose that is proposed in making a construction? Or is it only for it to know the means that lead to this end? Well settled down this, which is none other than to make a good and solid house, only the architect touches to make and find everything that is needed to carry out his work. The same observation can be made with respect to all other sciences." Ibid.

(3) In The Great Moral, Book II, Chapter IX, Of Pleasure: "To complete all the preceding theories, we must treat pleasure, since it is about happiness, and everyone agrees to believe that happiness is pleasure and In which it consists in living in a pleasant way, or at least, that without pleasure there is no happiness possible. Those who make war on pleasure and who do not want to count it among goods, recognize at least that happiness consists in not having pity, and not having pity is to be about to have pleasure. It is necessary, therefore, to study pleasure, not only because other philosophers believe that they should deal with it, but also because in some way it is a necessity that we should do so. Indeed, we are dealing with happiness, which we have defined as the act of virtue in a perfect life; But virtue refers essentially to pleasure and pain, and therefore it is essential to speak of pleasure, since without pleasure there is no happiness. " "The same is true of the sciences, for there are very few of them, for example, all mechanics, and yet science is not bad. On the contrary, science and nature are generally good, because just as the merit of a statuary should not be graduated by the works that he has done wrong, but by those he has done in a finished and perfect way, in the same way neither the Science, or nature, nor things in general should be appreciated by the poor results they produce, but by the good. " "When one works with pleasure one is virtuous, and one ceases to be one, if one only does good in pain. The pain is found only in things that are done out of necessity, and if you experience pain by doing well, it is because it is executed under the rule of necessity. But from the moment it is done out of necessity, there is no virtue. The reason is that it is not possible to practice acts of virtue without experiencing pain or pleasure; There is no other remedy ". Ibid.
