My dearest, I write this setter to you from my study downstairs. I got out of bed quietly so I wouldn’t wake you. I thought maybe we could talk but I prefer the more rigorous art of the written word albeit unenhanced by gestures, glances and, above all, the presence of genuine communication.

My love for you runs deep. We have loved each other so profoundly and lived tremendous experiences together: Life’s vicissitudes, children, losses, reunions, temptations, false illusions, wise decisions, tribulations and –why not?- moments of incredible peace, a peace of mind bestowed on us as a timely gift by our Lord Jesus, as we well know. However, my dearest, one day we will pass away. Both Faith and Hope dictate that this is for the better but tonight, I cannot overcome my overwhelming fear of dying. I know that Jesus trembled, sweat blood and cried that this bitter chalice be taken from his lips. I know all that, yet I know not where to seek solace, so troubled is my soul.

On the other hand, we know that anyone –no matter who it is and in what part of the universe, all the universes known and unbeknown to us- can live and saved if he united this tribulation and even his own death with the death of Jesus Christ resurrected. Because Jesus said that his mission on this earth was to save, not condemn. I feel that being a Roman Catholic means knowing that you are immersed in original sin which will remain with us forever on Earth. How can one not tremble before this putrefaction of the Original Sin which arouses and incites my freedom? And that’s how it is, my dearest. Because without freedom, that precious gift –and may I say almost secretly, “that damned gift” –there can be no love. Freedom is a neverending trial in human existence for as long as this time on Earth lasts, destined to fade away only once our hearts rest in the heart of Our Lord. As I recognize the profound misery which this trial provokes in the very core of my soul, body and spirit, I also realize that it is not enough for me to cry out for the grace of God, for the angels which protect us. No. Only the intact, and Incomprehensible reality of Jesus, man and God –the true Trinity. Is the anchor I seek. Such a deep secret is the eros of Jesus, and so profoundly does it touch and move man, that solace can be found even in the depths of misery of the Original Sin. Oh, felix culpa!

I shall lay by your side once more for just a moment. I shall leave this letter on your pillow, and leave for work without having breakfast so you can read this in my absence. I shall come back this afternoon earlier than usual. Please don’t call me. But try to be alone when I return. And, in the sweet caress of your warm embrace, it will feel as if I have found hidden solace, murmuring “there is but one name that is what it is: Truth and Happiness”.

Yours with all my love. That is, His love. And please forgive me for asking you to share my tribulations.

I love you, Godo.

-Darling, don´t you think we need to clear up, once and for all, what we should undestand by “moderation”? The last time we talked the term was left fluttering like a bird above our kisses and embraces.

Right you are. But I can´t improvise at all on the subject. We must strengthen each other in the greatest possible abandon of ourselves in the Lord´s love. He, who is the Love of all loves, shall guide us.

Fine, I agree, but please –what must we undestand by moderation? Is it perhaps to resist the burning desire yet in us to join body and soul in the embraces we crave? No, I´m certain it isn´t that.

Then how should it be understood?

Let me think back. I believe that once, as I was reading dante, there was footnote that made reference to St. Thomas Aquinas.

On the subject that concerns us?

Of course.

Please tell me, what did it say?

It was about the opposition between human vices or weaknesses. For example, between wastefulness and greed. Think of them as symmetrical opposites, the one opposed to the other. “Moderation” meant asking for the gift of insight, to be able to find the correct path.

But teh idea was to renounce both.

Yes, but the renouncment was not precisely a renouncment.

¡Explain that right away because I don´t get it!

No, what I really meant to say was that it was the summit.

I still don´t get it.

Imagine the base of a triangle. At one point there´s wastefulness and on the opposite, greed. Insight doesn´t erase it just like that.

Please do clarify once and for all!

I remember that insight shed light on the knowledge that the correct path was true generosity and not wastefulness, nor greed, of course.

In other words… Please, tell me quickly what you remember, don´t fool with my impatience!

Yes, we´re dealing with complete generosity, whose real meaning is confused when it is filled with charity –I mean, with the love of He Himself who is the Lord of love. We allow that love to inundate our own, and then, every just gifts is illuminated and becomes the bearer, not only of what may be counsel or meterial help, but, in turn, of the very presence itself of great love as well.

You mean trough that path, the divinity itself touches us and overcomes vices or weaknesses that we carry in ourselves?

That is correct.

I´ll try to clarify myself then –therefore moderation would be, thanks to the gift of insight, a true fullness and not a mere wiping off of the slate and sarting over.

Sweetheart, that´s what I remember. And as my thanks to the memory, I want to lose myself once more, this very instant, in your arms.

My beloved daughters, sons, grandchildren, all of you:

Well, as the great Portuguese poet Camoens rejoiced in a celebrated sonnet "Death came too for the sad". I always remember a comment about that verse. Sadness lives in the human being along with the happiness born of hope, for we are creatures created by the love that springs from love and grants eternal and absolute life. Sadness is a reminder of the congenital wound inflicted by that first arrogance which refuses to leave us. Oh, how they never ceased to beckon us to offer up, more humbly and generously, a greater abundance of that which is endlessly granted us by Providence. The truth is that after my succesful operation, I cannot help but admit that until I was given the biopsy result which turned out to be favorable through God's intervention, I experienced that critical moment like one who fords a river whose course is unknown.

Why do I write these lines while the sunshine warms my hospital bed and I don't expect all of us to get together and share the Joy? Well, it's because I take the fact that we are all mortal creatures seriously, as I hope we all do so. Taking such as step makes way for the gift of love we share in this life.

Each day, every task or action we undertake in our daily routine, in ordinary events, in our mistakes and pitfalls, in the fleeting joys, as these "tremors" in our health only serve to prove… really, each one of us knows how much he is indebted to the other. The chaplain came by to see me and I want to ask you to do as I did when I took his advice, something which offered me great solace and happiness. What was it I did? Gently and in a loud voice, as I fixed my gaze on the image of the Mother of all mothers, I slowly repeated each and every one of your names. The room filled with this unexpected litany.

My beloved, in a few days, we will be together in our home. Please invite everyone. And have those who are far away call us. Forgive me this sentimental lapse but how sweet it is to be sentimental…

And, like children, let us play "ring-a-ring-a-roses". And pray so that Life may allow us to remain child-like so that one day we may join hands in that ring which Dante sings in Paradise, repeating the absolute number -one, two, three, three, two, one- invoking the unity in which we will be immersed without ever understanding it, cast ashore in such pleasure. Prepare a delicious breakfast for me which we will have at home the day after tomorrow.

I adore all of you.

Cantar de los Cantares

¡Levántate ya, amada mía,
hermosa mía, y ven!
Que ya se ha pasado el invierno
y han cesado las lluvias.
Ya se muestran en la tierra los
                                      brotes floridos,
y encantador tu rostro.

Rise up, my darling;
my fairest, come away.
For now the winter is past,
the rains are over and gone;
the flowers appear in the countryside;
the time is coming when the birds
will sing,
and the turtle-dove’s cooing will
be heard in our land;
when the green figs will ripen on
the fig-trees
and the vines give forth their
fragrance.
Rise up, my darling;
my fairest, come away.
My dove, that hides in holes in the
cliffs
or in crannies on the high ledges,
let me see your face, let me hear
your voice;
for your voice is pleasant, your
face is pleasant, your
face is lovely.

Carne de Nuestra Carne

Mi querido marido (quiero rimar horriblemente y omito decirte esposo):

Quiero consultarte a corazón abierto.

¿Qué y cómo orientar a nuestros hijos?

Tuya siempre.

My dearest husband:

You really put me in a fix with your questions. There's nothing more complicated than thinking about the future of our children. Acording to an old belief parents want their children to be copies of themselves, both physically and morally, they even want them to fulfill the same roles in life. It's as if parents were trying to leave a recognizable and lasting copy of themselves (a kind of quest for immortality?) through their own offspring. All through history philosophers have gone over and over the subject of paternal and maternal desires. But enough of that, there's no way we can avoid the issue of our role in the education and formation of our children and their intellect, whether this involves their character formation or the encouragement of subtle nuances of femininity and "masculinity".

I want you to give me your honest opinion. Should we be permissive, flexible, broad-minded, or should we take a firm stand to try to form, to mould the flesh according to the principles given to us by the only Giver - God?

Blessed are those who are involved in the lives of those closest to them. I have to admit that have blind faith in prayer. Not because I want to avoid the issue but in case I make mistakes. What guidelines should we give our children, and how should we do it? Adolescence is a time when we feel insecure, volatile, unstable. For as Valle Inclán puts it, "adolescence is an illness". I know what you're going to say. You're going to suggest that we confide in our guardian angel so that he, in turn, can confer with the angel who watches over our children. And also that we should ask the spirit to give us the wisdom and foresight we need in this bruised world (beset by violence which overshadows our daily lives). What should we do? At the very least, love those who give us their love, trust in them and act according to their advice.

Time will reap its rewards (not necessarily in the form of success, but in that those whom we love and are trying to guide, open themselves up, become receptive and react). Time will tell. Thank goodness that you won't be traveling soon again and that we will be able to be together and talk about all this.

"Kiss me, Kiss me, again and again…" Do you remember the song? I hope you don't mind me going off at a tangent, but I've done it on purpose, so that the things I've said won't sound too serious and pretentions. Because the truth is that only when we are in each other's arms will we beable to think about this properly.

I can't wait for you to come home.

Yours forever.

De lo Masculino y lo Femenino

Querido:

Tu amada

Beloved,

It's wonderful how memories can fill the present with joy. I refer to those special moments in our lives. Perhaps each age -childhood, youth, maturity, old age- has a different feel to it. I must tell you that your comments on the things we read when we were students moved me deeply. Do you remenber that summer's night in Europe? I think we were about to get engaged, too young perhaps. We were in Paris standing outside the famous "Le Donne" restaurant where all the artist used to go, when sudenly we found ourselves talking about the "man" who is concealed within every woman, of the masculine element she has inside her and vice versa. I won't go into Ying and Yang here or the idea of woman as made from the flesh of man… I just want to remind you of one of the ideas that we explored then; within every woman there is a certain sense of masculity, -a man- and that her Eros longs to meet up with him. You, for your part, agreed taht every man possesses certain feminine qualities. I am not saying that this is a necessary condition of every great love, but I do remenber that that night we decided not to have dinner there. Instead we walked for a long time, almost as if we were unsure of how to touch one other, filled with that marvellous awareness that perhaps we were made for each other. That the masculinity in me and the feminity in you already sensed the forthcoming encounter.

The one belonging to the other; the flesh of each others flesh.

As I say, I don't clain taht this state of awareness is fundamental to great love. I am just pointing out that this memory and what we now experience with our family, our children -the flesh of our flesh- fills me with renewed pleasure. We each feel the secret stirring of Eros in the depths of both our beings; you, the masculinity of my feminine being, I, the feminity of your masculine being. Surely this is what happens when we are in each others arms. I love you so very much.

Your darling

Dos Almas , Una Sola Carne

Querido,

Me palpo y te toco.

My beloved,

Each forced absence makes me feel your body beating within mine. The desire is there, the dreams. The sighs, the quiet lulls. No, it cannot be possible that such a longing for one a nother be only a short- lived, fleeting sensation. I touch myself and feel you. Thus it was said: thou shall be two souls in one single flesh. Who could dream of a better passion in erotic desire? Connubial love pulsates as do the seasons of time and from its most profound intimacy, it demands everlasting lifes beyond all other things, unrestrained by all absence and deathe. As it bestows a kiss, the trembling lip bears witness to this. I too begin to tremble as I await your retourn on Monday. In your name, i kiss our children with all tha incredible passion we both feel.

I love you.

-¿Quizás no tenía otra alternativa.

-Why do you say that North America invented real love in the Great Gatsby?

-What I' saying is that the Great Gasby is the only novel which is about real love.

-But Daisy gives him up, she leaves him, where's the love there?

-I'm not talking about love between people. What happens in the Great Gatsby is that he's a boor, a nobody in disguise who can't forget his dream. And she, married to another, but loving him, uses him shamelessly. I't's the king of love which is absolute passion, sacrifice, and betraya. It has all the characteristics of genuine passion, which goes beyond the accepted norms of good or evil in life -the sacrifice for the one he loved. Gatsby could have denounced her crime, but although it meant humiliation for him and the husband, he keeps quiet.

-Perhaps he had no alternative. Who was going to believe him anyway?

-Not at all, a word from him was enough to condemn her. This is what makes him a really great lover. He makes a deliberate sacrifice for her, like Achilles when the time comes to defend ANtigone. All he wants is to see her, see her, and see her again.

-And surely he is disillusioned by her lack of love for him? No, his love is steadfast, he sacrifices himself, he is like Christ sacrificed. He dies for her, he gives his life. -A strange type… strange relationship, don't you think?

-Fitzgerald was half way in and half out of society. He was half mad and a genius at the same time. He wrote the Great Gatsby in the moment of post war euphoria, a mindblowing, crazy time when there was an almost violent desire for life.

-But you know, the really great personality of the novel is neither Gatsby nor the girl, it's the third party, the friend who realized what was going on and through whose eyes the story is revealed.

El Deseo de Desear

Querido:

Parece cierto.

My Belowed:

It seems to be true. No, no: it is true. One hungers after what one doesn`t have, or rather, desire, desires. "Give me back the desire to desire", do you remember we once read that? (I think it was Goethe). The brilliance of beauty is like a light which calls and draws all things to it.

How can one forget that the attraction of the famous apple in the Garden of Eden lay in its beauty? It is taken for granted that nobody feels like creating new life out of uglines. That is why appearances matter, why human beings are constantly concerned that their own radiance should shine forth. And can one not attribute to Eros the excitation that in the coupling of male and female, seeks procreation and conception. It is true that this erotic spark is the immortal property shared both by man and beast. This accounts for the need for adornment , for being "on heat". This is why it is impossible not to be irresistibly drawn by the splendor of beauty. It is true that every culture or species has different conception of beauty, and that what attracts one is incomprehensible to the other. But this does not make it any less valid.

It is in this way, according to Plato, that Divinity and Beauty come together. Eros resplendent in many shapes and guises. Perhaps, because of his irresistible attraction, the result of that "coupling" is known as "delivery" or "bringing to light". It is light. And this is what happens in our marriage, when, satiated with caresses and overflowing with delight, we look forward to procreation and conception. And so the real immorality of mortal beings lies in "generation" (in the true sense of the word) or rather, "perpetual birth". It would be a sin of false modesty not to say this to you, or to teach other–, how wonderful it is to love each other in the harmonious, rhythmic pleasure of Eros!

I love you.

-My Dearest Husband, the time has come to think about our children's future.

-Yes, you're quite right. It is up to us to help and guide them. Now that Elisa is Sixteen and Ana seventeen, they are both going to need a lot of help from their mother. Juan needs his father's watchful eye but he also needs your maternal love and care even more than before.

-What are our biggest problems?

-As far as the girls are concerned -the problems typical of that age. How can we forwarn or guide them without making them feel that we are pressurizing them.

-And as for Juan, how should we prevent him from falling into the trap of copying the father figure, at least in the beginining?

-Religious crises are always inevitable although we have a written Catechism to go by. And in the same way there is an inevitable crisis in every man's life when he rebels against the paternal model has previously accepted and faces his own quest for liberty.

I remember as a child that al though I was brought up with the example of a superb mother figure, that was the last thing I wanted for myself. When I came home from school I was determined to be a teacher. When I went to the bank the sound of the typewriters filles me with dreams of becoming a secretary. When I saw the nuns at school, their tranquil expressions and neat black habits inspired me with an almost fanatical religious vocation. So you see these models made more impression on me than the best mother in the world.

-Juan on tje other hand, regards me , his father, as the "be all and end all". Like me he wants to be a succesful business man, with a Harvard degree, etc. And so what should we do?

-Just tell them about our own experience. Love, real enjoyment, maternity, are sources of happiness which are real and which last forever.

-This is the path which leads to complete fulfilment in every human being, and we shall see how each one of us copes with this, within the framework of his own life.

El Eros Pleno

Querida:

My beloved, I recorded the passage read last night, and shall have it framed. What rare beauty is to be found within the extraordinary of ordinary life!

Text: "That prejudice (so common both because ofits deffusion and its unscientific principles) wich labels tha Arab race and Muslim people as sensual, is belied by the truth. The Bam Údra tribe from Yemen, were of pure Arab stock but none the less their tribal name means "the children of virginity". They never betrayed this concept of love. "I belong to a race who, when we love, we die" were the words of a member of this tribe. Yamil died of love for Butayna, his lady, without ever having dared to lay a finger on her. Urwa an d his beloved Afra, lovers and poets both o f them died virgin, consumed by the passion wich had burnst within them since chilhood.

He who loves and remains chaste dies, and dies a martyr. She, beloved in God and by God. The book of the Flower, Ibn Hazin de Córdoba, 11th century, the Necklace of th Dove. Books of absolute love. Virginity, chastity, loving faithfulness, nurture amidst ordinary passion, the most pure pasion of sublime love.

I love you, your beloved

-Gracias. Godofredo- me dice.

My beloved wife, In reply to your question, allow me to tell you of a fortuitous encounter I had with a woman, to be precise, on the corner of 8 Norte and Libertad, here in Viña. Under the blazing sun, she said to me: "Excuse me, sir, are you the author of "Secrets of Eros"?…

With false modesty and feigned reserve, I confirmed that I was indeed. She proceeded to explain that she was back in Chile after having lived many years in Germany and, to my utter surpise, she remembered reading my book on Don Quijote and the Divine Comedy published by "Rowholt Verlag". As if she had discovered a direct link, she related the passion of Eros which moved both Dante and Cervantes, as described in this book, with my articles in the Ladeco América magazine. She amazed me by asking how on esrth could I remembered so many readings (she only presued I did). As our conversation went on about why one reads and writes, I told her: "Some say that one`s soul aquires more depth when reads about conflicts or sees them in films or on the stage. It is basically like the age- old catharsis described by Aristotle in his Ars Poetica. My pseudo- learned memory, subject to ineffable forgetfulness, like a refreshing torrent of water, eludes obstacles created by memories to sink into the sea of Eros, that absolute Eros wich is, and always will be, the only real secret.

"Please, Godofredo, she interrupted, "explain this more clearly." I replied, "That enraptured Eros has a name from whose true meaning we will derive infinite pleasure without ever understanding it. It is the name of a woman by wich the profound link will ever be completed: the inexplicable relationship of love between us and the Creator of all creation in the presence of that name, the call of love in whose womb nestles the very essence of fullness. The name of Eros to wich you refer is that of Jesus Christ glorified for all time, a sinking into the leke of his heart (is it needles to say this is an ancient metaphor also reflected in the history of every spoken and written word?)."

"Thank you, Godofredo", she said. I simply murmured back:

"Look, perhaps Memory forgets memories, cricunstances and, I dare say, even feelings. like a flame wich beckons to the butterfly to burn itself in its very own calling (this is not, by any means, an originakl idea; many poets have referred to this). But let´s talk of desire. Eros, seizing everything in its path, casts side any name or shape unrelated to its thirst for the absolute, for inscrutable and endless limits. At the point, Mrs. Wittenborg insisted, "Can you tell me what it is?" "The absolute Eros wich inspires and overwhelms: "l´amor che muove il cielo e l`altre stelle" as Dante puts it. Do you know what happens, Madam or, to put it correctly, Ana Wittenborg? One always speaks of absolute love and, apparently, the process is so paradoxical because Eros os truly a secret, as the title of my column inthe magazine siggests. to elicit a smile before such topics which seem slightly pedantic, it´s strange they should be discussed on board a plane. Could it be that the secret of Eros always takes flight?".

Lovingly yours, Godo.

Tu marido

I had only just learnt of the birth of our son when, in the middle of all the joy and excitement I had only just learnt of the birth of our son when, in the middle of all the joy and excitement, friends and relations, our dear friend Roberto took me aside to tell me something.

He spoke nineteen to the dozen, he was so happy and, in case I forget anything he told me, I am going to write it down inmediately so that I can share it with you.

You have been entrusted -he said- with an "irreplaceable" being. Seeing my puzzled expression, he went on to explain:

"Listen, a myriad of angels fell with Lucifer who was their prince and the most beatiful of them all. And it is said that every dawn they take their place in the cosmos and that no other can fulfill the role which God has entrusted specifically to them. No other can replace them in the cosmic harmony. The least of them all, the faintest or the most beatiful, each is irreplaceable in the inaudible music of the fulfilment of all worlds past and still to come.

What's more, if I recall it was Dante who used this world, only when the number of human beings created equals the number of fallen angels will all words, past and future, reach eternal fulfilment.

"This is the wondrous nature of the creature which has been entrusted to you and your wife. This is the radiance of maternity".

I've written these words in a hurry. But, my darling, there is still so much that you and I must understand, the human mystery which is implied by the birth of our baby. And that is something which we must think more about:

A big kiss to you and our son.

Your husband

El Misterio de la Rutina

Querido:

My dear,

Speaking of "Two in one single flesh", I was very moved by your reply. I felt the excitement of flesh made flesh, and await your return impatiently. May it be soon because Godo came back from is usual jaunts with a strong desire to see you. I want to describe his adventures, Godo says that anything extraordinary which repeats itself becomes commonplace, that the routine of the day should possess a more profound quality to it than what we suppose. Imperceptibly, the conversation turned to the subject of routine and typical family life. But, suddenly, he interrupted me and told me this. At one time, the French talked of "le regard du coeur", as when you unwittingly gaze at your child in a distant, absent -minded way as he clings to a toy. An ineffable tenderness overwhelms you in the middle of a routine day. And -he added- if love truly exists between husband and wife, then an unexpected movement of my leg can suddenly inspire that "regard du coeur". Married couples tend to let the moment pass, they don't allow themselves. But if they perceive the moment, then -exchanging quick glances- they weave schemes to leave the room and, as in the beginning, they embrace and kiss each other in a discreetly dark corner.

All of a sudden, this bothered me. Was he chiding us for something? I asked him, "Are you giving me advice or just speaking from experience? " Godo smiled in a tender, charming way and replied, "Tomorrow we'll see about this at dinner with your husband".

Answer me - I told him- but he opened the door and left, murmuring simply "the mystery of routine is time".

i love you, your beloved

Godo.

My dearest:

A light drizzle rustles in the tall trees along 8 Norte, here in Viña del Mar (it´s raining, it´s pouring, the old man is snoring. Went to bed and he bumped his head, couldn´t get up in the morning!… this is an old nursery rhyme handed down trough the ages and which we chanted as children, trying to stop the rain so we wouldn´t get wet) but I feel in my innermost self that a concealed silence must reign in every murmur -like a secret, an opening or love- to make room for sound. don´t you recall that your own piano teacher used to say ( I can´t quite remember whom he was quoting) that real music lies not in the sound but in the silence it concealed, and that a skillful performer knows how to reveal that secret of love, that invisible love match so it may become audible.

What poet has not caressed the dream of expressing the unfathomable silence of words in murmuring verse? But there is no greater perfection that the word of Jesus when he spoke of the ineffable mystery of being three persons in one. An innefable sweetness fit for a celestial dance when He who was crucified and resurrected guides us to the fullness of the tender love of lovers which begs for and demands ecstacy. "Ex-tasis" means "to be outside", to be thrown into the vortex of love never-ending.

You might ask why I seem to harp on this subject inspired by the mere sight of a drizzle. It´s simple. You know perfectly well as do our children, and may they live a full life as you and I have, the true erotic secret of Time.

Now I walk trough the streets, letting the gentle drizzle caress me. I quicken my pace to return to santiago as soon as possible so your arms may envelope me, to hold in a tight embrace that secret of Eros which not only allows us to love one another but also -oh mystery of mysteries! -in between wars, illness, fallacies, good and healthy people and the daily hell which newspapers tell us is what the world is about. I anticipate the flavor of that salad you prepare and offer to anyone who wishes to enjoy the echoing sound of this drizzle over Viña del mar which inspired this contemplation. My dearest, the love which loved us first is in everyday life insignificant though it may appear. Until the evening, then… you knows who truly loves you when you hear once more "My dearest, I love you".

Godo.

El Reposo del Guerrero

Querido:

No quisiera ofenderlo.

dearest:

It´s true. Every time you came home from a business trip, although you never failed to call me from wherever you were, I always had the feeling that our bed was your refuge.

It is not without shyness and hesitation that I write to you, for fear that you may think it forward of me to speak about you in such an intimate situation. My love, I know well that the strength your work demands, and with wich you look after our home, my love and that of your children is a source of pride to you, genuine and healthy.

I don´t want to offend you. The comfort of our bed always reminds me of the painting we saw on our honey moon: "The repose of the warrior". Do you remember it?

But now I must confess that I no longer agree with the explanation wich the museum guide gave then. I no longer see it as a halt. , a " dis- traction", in the weariness of the soldier, nor as an expression of pleasure wich lightens the warrior´s helmet.

Forgive my lack of modesty but I must share this with you. You remind me more of one who comes to the still waters of a lake, going back to his childhood, dreaming perhaps of a more serene world, yet one not lacking in things to be done. This is how I feel you, I see you and caress you. And holding you close to me thus. I feel myself more your wife and your mother, and I am conscious of myself as being more completely a woman and more completely lover. Perhaps I shouldn´t write these things to you… I love you, your loved one.

El Ritmo de la Moda

Querida:

My dear:

I misunderstood for some time this need you had to vary your entire appearance. Dresses, shoes, hairstyles, jewels, perfumes. It was difficult for me to understand for, after all, beauty or even allure, is more than just appearance. I believe feminine beauty enhances all that surrounds it by its very presence. Painters on the other hand understood this secret of Woman which is far from being mere vanity. They understood that this constant feminine urge was even more profound than the usual desire to perpetuate the species. A call to another serenity that daily life conceals form us, the serenity born of man`s intimate destiny, a destiny of beautiful quietude. and for this reason, in order to emphasize this call, they painted the beauty as an invariable which the ornaments of the changing season or of happenstance.

How strange it is that man`s appearance has come to be static and that this ways are found wanting as though this call were more fitting to woman. So it is that , ultimately, fashion is more than just a game of vanities, it evokes, appeals to and embodies the rhythm between Man and Woman, leading them to a serenity, a happy abandonment such as that dream of by poets like Baudelaire.

I love you.

-No logro adivinar…

-Bueno, no me retes. Mira, pienso por ejemplo en Isadora Duncan.

-Pero, porqué.

-No sé.

-Bueno, no importa.

Honey, this cofee tastes like nothing. How about if we lace it with something? No, forget it. I just said that to say something. Sitting here on the terrace, watching the people bo by, listening to the noisy traffic… I feel as if the days just slip away.

Come on, it`s not the coffee`s fault that you are bored with the routine of daily life.

Touché. Look, honey, how about if we play a game.

Fine, but no riddles.

How about if we tell each other what we most admired, or rather, what we saw as possible model, a lifestyle that we have liked to for us.

Okay, you first.

No, ladies first.

All right, but don`t be surprised. I would have liked to have been really daring, capable of doing maybe even crazy things.

Like who?

Well, don´t get mad at me! I´m thinking about Isadora Duncan for example.

Why her!

I don´t know. Maybe because of her dancing, her love for the great dissident poet Essemin. But sweetheart, he commited suicide, and he must have a reason.

Yes, I know, it´s all totally disapprovable, but it´s just a maner of speaking, like going out and ahving a great time. Her strangulating herself with a foulard, etc. I seem to remembre that after her death, her brother went around Paris dressed up like a Greek, recalling that type of dance.

You mean you wanted to be a dancer?

No, not really. It was just an example of an out-of-the-ordinary lifestyle, of course I don´t mean a licentious way of life or doing any of the things she did.

You know, I´m listening to you, and I know what you´re trying to say, but I don´t really understand it.

Well, it doesn´t matter. Now you tell me, what´s your hidden dream?

You´ll be amazed. I would have liked to have been a perfect gentleman.

Like who, name a movie star as an example.

Well, just as an example, Gary Cooper. I think about his integrity, his loyalty and how the characters he played in his movies were just like him. I remember that the president visited him on his deathbed and took him his Oscar.

Yes, and do you remember tehat something similar happened to John Wayne?

Yes, but please, you forget about Isadora Duncan and I´ll forget about Gary and John.

Forget about them?

But, honey, what´s so funny?

It´s just that a conversation like this is like a joke, a great joke.

And without even looking for it, we found peace. Let´s order another cup of coffee and enjoy it without blamining it for anything.

You´re right a good laugh, a conversation in jest, brings us back to our peace of mind and our beloved children.

Tu madre

My dearest daughter:

You ask me what tje wedding night is like. And I answer you in the same words someone told me on my own wedding night. It´s not only an incredible celebration, but also a public act in the Celestial World and in the Cosmos, so your anxiety and shyness is justified… Firstly, all your friends and family, who will be with you on your wedding day, will understand this. And then, the entire city, who will receive the announcement of this special night through the sounds from the tin cans and horns if the wedding caravan. Afterwards, on the night that your love is consummated, God who is love will be present, for He will be the Light. And also the angels, especially your guardian angel and his, as well as the arcangels will join in the celebration as they hear the hymm created by the beating of your own hearts. The richness of the caresses and of pure voluptuosness will be the melody wich they themselves inspire and protect, so that from your naked modesty may blossom the passion and happiness of the that hymn.

In the midst of this universal choir, there is not one single part of the spouses´ bodies and souls that is not sacred and willing to received the light of pleasure whit wich the Divinity wishes to be praised. So give freely of yourselves, one to the other, for you are the children of God.

Lovingly,

Your mother.

Tú que has mirado mis ojos, ¿recuerdas?

Hello, how are you? Have you been to the supermarket?

-Oh yes, that's one of my daily chores.

-Mariana has asked me for my article and I wanted to read it to you first.

"There is a vast table spread out all over our land. In an instant, the Supper appears; the transubstantiated bread and wine; and in its fullness, that same flesh which the One and Triduum Love created as the greatest Love of all, which now, eternal and infinite, shines forth in the eternal light of His eyes. You, who have looked me in the eyes, face to face, do you remember? Light of that lightning which cannot be grasped, which burns only in the eyes of those who see through the gift of faith, that burn with confident hope and which aspire to the perfect Love vouchsafed to those who partake of the bread and blood of the Triduum. Beloved Love within One Body which even as we sleep, grows within us without waking us, and fashions us trough those mercies, needs, failings and denials of a world and worlds challenged by liberty -that doubt- ful liberty yearned for by the lover who would be loved- which we, human beings, build like a hymn embracing our hopes and joys, our rejoicing and mourning within the unique comunion of tree and star, of suns and moons, of every unexpected form of life, doubt, vacilation, correction, discovery, disaster and success.

And thus the winds, in this temporal world, blow over all those worlds which at every moment of time hasten forwards bent on fulfilment within time's yoke so that afterwards, beyond the limits of time we may reach that state when we may forever contemplate beauty, truth and life. And in the new buds from which build this world, there flickers unobtrusively that ungraspable light, maternal and paternal, nurtured by the mother of mothers who dwells in each of us; like a gift unheralded and unannounced, forever virginal and mediatory. And so that every work may prosper, there is the sweetness of true admiration washed by the childlike tears of a delicate smile.

I am talking about that absolute friendship which life demands of life."

-So what do you think?

-There are some parts that I don't quite understand. Maybe we could talk about it.

-Yes, let's do that. That would be a great help.

My dearest:

A former pupil of mine wrote me, refering to Hannah Arendt (the wellknown follower of Heidegger y Husserl) an author of an essay, regarded as a classic, ontha contemplative and active life. She refers to architecture and dramatic tragedy as the outward expresions of the soul of a people. In a daring and novel definition wich refers to that erotic (in the true meaniung of the word) facet of the world made world, she describes as the driving force with wich Divine Love, Eros, moves through every being like a song. Although unusual and surprising, her words strike a chord. I am sending you this passage wich I find very moving and wich prhaps gies us true insight to one of the true secrets of Eros. Here it is.

Every step carries within it an echo
Concealed
Delicate and precise
Which moves the foot
So we may continue forwards.
And likewise
An invisible intent
Moves the intelligence
And the heart- this is the soul-
So that the mind
With hands outpread in formulas
Wich envisage tha consttructionj of the world
Emerges from it secret silence
And gives shape to the melody
Wich discovers and revels that measured extension
Wich emb races space. Such is architecture.
She encompasses and contains distances
And ushers in the light wich dispells their intimate secrets
And a chord rises or
Falls, soars from the depths to the heights,
And from the heights plummets again to meet the earth
And refashion multiplicity.
This is the invisible song
of unity,
Unity wich allows life to take flight
Moves the world,
Towars that hymn of thanks giving
The inspiration wich
The One Lovin Love brteathes through
Those bodies wich have become instruments
Of a music
Wich is prayer an name (Christ)
Whose notes
Resound like the heartbeats
Of that glorious Heart of Divinity
Born again in all its glory.

All my love, Godo

In love, the cuestion is, how does one put up with the differences which arise between us…?

-Do you men that incompatibilities will always exist?

Exactly… and they can only be overcome if some greater, more trascendental force lies behind love, that's what makes them bearable. If it were not that way, the eros would break down, there'd be all kinds of separations, free love… and all that, if you see what I mean?

-Go on, tell me more

I mean that loveis trascendental and eternal, it does not belong to this world but lives on in the soul of the one who loves; and that is why differences can be overcome.

-But what can we do to avoid them?

Absolutely nothing. They're inevitable.

Because we all have our own characters, and in love there is both attraction and repulsion at the same time. Look at this, for example:

-"Shut the door"

-"Shut it yourself"

-"I'm fed up with you always telling me to shut the door". Do you see?

-But if he knows that she likes to have the door shut, why didn't he shut it in the first place?

Just force of habit.

-You say that differences are inevitable, but they're not there to begin with… what happened to the dreamworld… Why did those differences arise? What I'm saying is that sex is not a physical demand, it's in ones eyes, in a gaze.

-And what's that got to do with differences? I'm trying to tell you about attraction and repulsion. People always believe that attraction is purely erotic, but sex is not a physical demand, it's much more than that: it's the spirituality in ones eyes.

La Distracción Erótica

Querida:

Dear:

It seems absurd to speak of distractions when one is deeply tied by a burning embrace. Besides, can one perceive at all, in that blissfull state?

One believes at first that they are the soul´s own ghosts that one is ascribing to one´s mate. Later, psicologist friends will explain that due to some infantile represions there is a faked frigidity in those adorable givings.

But love –eros– luckily has sagacious eyes of its own. He taught me suddenly that your vague gaze gliding trough my body trapped in your´s, those eyes at nowhere´s standstill, that in your sweet look all women`s deepest tones of tenderness were trapped, and that they escaped male domination not to flee, but to give the best of themselves: that which is unknown to man. I learnt to love you with the art and care that your body and soul, you, mother of my sons, require. As if there were a constant virginity in women´s tenderness that we men do not traverse.

Tus primos.

-Honey, help me get this box out of the closet, would you?

Careful sweetheart, don´t slip… okay, fine, hand it to me.

Open it.

Well, what do you know, all the old pictures… of when we met…

Please don´t look at the dates, we both know quite well how old we are.

Your first pregnancy. But lets move forward.

Look, there we are with with all the kids, playing in the park.

It was a great time.

Did I tell you the Benitezes called yesterday?

Your cousins

Yes, they were thinking, now that we´re all alone and all our kids have their own families, they suggested we go off on a cruise together.

What did you say?

I´m sure I said exactly what you would have.

You refused, of course.

That´s right.

Tehy didn´t take it badly?

No, they laughed and said, same as always, what an unusual couple we are.

Exactly, I think the time has come to stay put.

And humbly accept that there´s shame in the lessons one has learned well.

That patience is the science of peace of mind.

That´s why we´ll never be alone. The love that was created by the great love is between us.

Here and now, as it was and always will be, until it grants us total plenitude in eternity.

Is there anything more beautiful than to have absolute conviction of the sweetness of hope?

Come and read this, it´s just exactly right.

Who´s it by?

By someone who knew of the efficiency of patience. Listen: “Let nothing disquiet you, nothing daunt you, all things pass, God is unchanging, patience achieves all, he who has God lacks for nauhgt, only God suffices.” I propose, my dear. That we write everything that has just happened to us exactly as it happened, and that we´ve said at this very moment, and that we send it to each of our children, asking them to reply. I just thought of something.

What?

That with our letter and their answers we could create a small pamphlet, photocopy it, and then each of us could have a booklet that we´ll have put together among all of us.

But with a dedication to our daughter who´s a nun.

How would it go?

I would copy it from excerpt dedicated to the religious profession written by St. Theresa of Avila.

Recite it.

“Because it is our husband´s wish that we imprisoned be, in the richest finery of religion.”

Quite appropiate, but now let´s go out for a walk in the park, the day hasn´t gotten cold yet.

Like young marrieds. Or better said, like a couple of kids. That´s how teh happiness of waiting moves in the heart and soul.

Anyway, I´m going to ask you a favor.

Your wish is my command.

Invite me to a cup of tea at the corner cafe.

Done, let´s go.

You get a move on while I shut the windows and lock the door.

La Manzana de Eva

-¡Nunca antes había oído esto!

-Así es pues, esta en el génesis! (3/14).

That`s the first time I`ve ever heard that!

Well, that`s the way it is, it`s all there is Genesis (3-14). The fruit was so tantalizingly beautiful that Eve just had to eat it, she was dazzled by its beauty. –But why was she so dazzled, and not Adam?

Perhaps because women are more sensitive, more intuitive, they`re less rational than men. And that`s still true today. A woman is the first to give in to beauty and, strangely enough, beauty is always linked to femininity. Just think of Venus, the Mona Lisa… –So sensitivity and intuition were responsible for sin?

No, quite the opposite, that`s just the way it seems. They showed her the way to a fulfillment and pleasure unattainable by someone who does not have these faculties, although they led to sin. It was the serpent which persuaded her to sin, she was not content with just looking at the apple, she wanted to consume its beauty.

–But Adam was just as vulnerable…

Adam followed her example because God created them as a couple, fatefully… Eve was not an afterthought. Eve in Hebrew means "to live" and Adam means "man" the human being. In the first version of the Creation, God did not create Eve out of none of Adam`s ribs, the image and likeness of God were created as a couple.

–But what has the apple got to do with love and why have you mentioned it in these dialogues?

The apple is a manifestation of beauty, and love is a natural consequence. Plato says that extreme beauty opens our hearts to love and Saint Paul says the same thing; the wonder of nature, the beauty of the universe leads us to the love of God. One could call it Saint Paul`s apple…

La Piedad de Miguel Ángel

Querido:

Siempre tuya.

Dearest,

I write to you in haste, more than a letter, a note… at length.

Yesterday, after several years, Juana Clerc came to see me; in case you can´t remember her, she was my best friend during our university days. You can imagine the thousand turns our conversation took. But I shan´t repeat them –women´s talk– as men facetiously like to call it. What happened was this; in the midst of our anecdotes, we especially recalled one particular lesson which neither of us has ever forgotten. The professor, shy and cautious, spoke of the "pietas". And going beyond any religious significance he explained it as the act of "embracing", of opening arms and heads, as if outstretched, as one who makes room for the other. The subject kept me awake, thinking about you. For this is the expression of greatest intimacy between husband and wife. I was deeply moved remembering that we both are the live interpretation of "pietas", living it body to body. It is a precise expression of what I feel and dream after the act of love, when your cheek remains close to my shoulder and in that languid drowsiness our outstretched bodies are far more aware than we are of ourselves. Your "real" presence shivered trough me until I feel asleep. (Please don´t laugh at my false prose.) I consider this mutual "embrace" a gift in our married life.

I shall not read this letter again, for if it seems to be literature, I shall tear it up. I send it to you to tell you that our passion also goes beyond that delicate gesture of love.

Forever Yours.

Let's read Juan's letter just once more.

-No, I know it off by heart.

-Darling, we're living in a "global world" in which racial and religious differences no longer account for mach.

-Yes I know, but I still can't believe that Juan went off and married a Muslin girl from the University of Chicago without even telling us. What on earth are we going to do?

-First and foremost, not a hint of reproach or recrimination, nothing that could damage the parental bond which links us to both of them now that they are man and wife. Let's take our time, think about it, ask God for guidance.

Remember what we once learnt "heap the glowing coals of love upon the head of the whom we love so that his action may not be foolish". This is exactly what we should do with Juan and Cynthya.

-We must offer up some vows, make some sacrifices.

-Saint Contardo Ferreni was the first saint to offer sacrifices at the altar. Do you know what he did? On one occasion after a delicious banquet, he vowed before the crucified Christ that he would do without sugar in his coffee. Just as he was about to take a sip, his hostess leaned forward and said "May I? and helped him to sugar. He could not be rude. he accepted her kindness and offered Jesus his thwarted intentions. Everything is possible if we are guided by love.

-That's great, we can do all that, but just imagine what vows or sacrifices Cynthya's parents must be making for their rebellious daughter.

-Let's put our trust my dear in our faith, and in as much as we make our own tiny sacrifices, so our love will also grow for we are one in body.

-Yes I know that. I'll write to Cynthya as if she were my own daughter.

-Yes, my love. That's how it should be. And I'll write to her parents telling them that conflict is the last thing on our mind.

-Darling, may Saint Contardo guide us. Turn out the night and put your arms.

It is sensuality. The satisfaction of pleasures, especially in sexual terms. Painters speak of how voluptuous painting can be, of the "voluptas" of the brushstrokes… It is the pleasure derived form the brushstrokes.

– What do you mean when you say that greatest voluptuousness lies in virginity and chastity?

Virginity is like a beam withheld within. When it is held back, it contains within itself all desires. A priest is husband to all woman. That is the height of voluptuousness, it allows one to bear the possibility of being mother or husband to all.

To carry this in one`s body is to be virtually unlimited. It is like an unfired weapon that still contains its maximum power. Once it is fired, it no longer possessed that capacity of total power, it lost its momentum.

– In this lost forever or can it be recovered? In heaven, the fullness of this voluptuousness, that capacity for keeping alive all these possibilities, will be recovered.

Madona de las Flores de la Tarde

Querida,

Sólo me reposo escribiéndote.

Ahora estoy cansado

Tuyo, tu esposo

Dearest,

I’m exhausted. It’s been a long hard day, one thing after another, meetings, problems, complicated financial matters…But as I open my window and look out I find myself thinking of you, and the words of Amy Lowell’s poem, “Madonna of the Evening Flower" spring to my mind. Writing them down for you helps me relax.

“All day long I have been working,
Now I am tired.
I call: "Where are you?"

That’s how it begins, and then it goes on:

The sun shines in on your books,
On your scissors and thimble just put down,
But you are not there.
Suddenly I am lonely:
Where are you?
I go about searching.

Then I see you,"

And as I write, the bells from the church next door begin to "While all about us peal the loud, sweet `Te Deums' of the Canterbury bells".

Am I awake or dreaming? It doesn’t matter! All my love to you and the children, hope to be back in three days at the most. A big hug to you all,

Your loving husband

Maternidad y Paternidad

Querida:

My beloved:

I must speak to you once more about this new child that Providence has sent us. But, this time, let me confide to you how I lay awake here last night, far away from you, pondering on the differences between motherhood and fatherhood. I shall be with you all again tomorrow and then all my thoughts will become a reality.

It always moves me to the very core to see how a mother, with all her boundless love, tenderness and almost mysterious passion, is willing to spend sleepless nights breastfeeding her child. Not even the best nanny can lavish such attention, prompted by that desire to hold one´s child fast and close, to assume motherhood completely. and then there´s the father on the other hand who realizes the difference between this and fatherhood. Let me explain: a mother knows, and always will know, that she bore this child and it is hers. A father cannot perceive fatherhood with the same intensity. His feelings are based on his faith in, and love for, his wife. But he does not have nor carry within him that profound maternal experience.

Paternal love is of a different nature: more wide-ranging and extensive. A love that offers up the world so that the growing child can become part of the reality built by man. I believe it was the poet Federico Hölderlin who joined together the words Homeland and Fatherhood. Homeland in one´s native tongue, environment and world. A place where children can be and become themselves. As the old saying goes: "The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world". It wouldn´t surprise anyone if tonight after my journey and day´s work, I were to take our child in my arms and walk about the room, quietly singing "Hush, my child; hush, my loved one" while both while both mother and child fall asleep. And here´s yet another intimate secret. As my eyelids grow heavier with sleep, my paternal instinct tells me of things to come: the adolescent´s nagging doubts, the boy´s coming of age, calling forth talents needed for overcoming all sorts of obstacles successfully in the future. And so, once I am finally back home, and mother and child are fast asleep, I shall lay lovingly by your side.

Your adoring husband.

Melancolía

Querida:

My Dearest.

There´s something I must tell you. When work or our daily responsibilities keep us apart and I happen to look out of some window, I am suddenly overcome with sadness. It´s not just nostalgia or the longing to be together. It´s a constant feeling that hurts. Maybe it´s true that deep down inside I know that one day for whatever reason, we could be separated. This feeling of sadness reminds me of what someone once said, "melancholy is a fatal disease, for it brings with in the distant mists of dissapearance." And that same person offered comfort with this reply. "It´s not by your own will, virtue courage or effort that you overcome this or rekindle hope, it´s by faith. Faith which assures us that the true love of lovers will never end in sadness. faith that the God of love himself will keep us together forever.

Forgive my rambling on like this but I wanted to tell you that the bond of love between us which makes us a family, is indestructible. Our kisses when we see each other again will bear witness to our everlasting love.

I adore you.

Mundos Imaginarios

My beloved,

Business matters have kept me here longer than I anticipated. But, by Monday, I shall be with you and the children. I have thought long and hard about everything you told me over the phone last week. In all truth, what you call sharing also our fantasy worlds had never ocurred to me and certainly never with such clarity. All the joys and vicissitudes of our relationship as lovers and our daily life together make one forget that a considerable part of our existence extends itself onto our fantasy worlds. Desires, dreams, endless ambiguities and -why not?- temptations as well. What you assert is true. One doesn't consider it appropriate to share such matters. Only now and again, as if out of carelessness, does one tell the other a little bit about what one dreamt of being with one's beloved by one's side, and how it didn't turn out that way. Almost as if it wouldn't be worth it. I believe Woman's acute sensitivity can shed more light on that world of fantasy and the guidance it provides, and can ponder it morerealistically. It is as if one forgets that even while asleep -and especially in dreams- lovve can be experienced. At least during almost half our lives.

These past nights, I have been recalling fragments of certain intentions I once had, words you uttered subtly implying something; and I also began to evoke situations. I must tell you that the intricate pattern which started to weave itself in my memory and in my heart moved me deeply. As soon as I return, we will devote time to this, time to recover that part or world within us which bind us long for such attention, just as the homely hearth must be replenished with fresh firewood. Hold fast to, caress entwine our fantasies or ambiguities in the vivid realness and delicacy of an embrace.

Till Monday then. I love you.

Valor del Sueño en el Erotismo

Querida:

Dear:

I read, and again read on and on your letter on dreams. What a recording of subtle reality! It is true that in dreams, the lover figure appears, sometimes more vividly than it does in a state of vigil. And all is so slight, the gestures, the smile that makes movements fascinating, the arm that naturally surrounds the head, the neck as a sum-total of conveyance, and the sight that trembles in the neighbouring face´s skin. But above all, the gaze. It appears veiled at first, troubles by passion, but in finding the beloved one´s eyes, it brightens, lit up with rays of light.

it is true that in dreams where the loved one is dreamt of, caresses are smoother and the way of abandoning one´s self to the other recalls the youthful arm strokes of a swimmer in the midst of all oceans. How long that sensation lasts! Much more than just waking, sometimes for days, and in a way, forever in remembrance.

He that has, as you now tell me, dreamt, bears with him that moment. The kisses, the courtesies, everything between himself and his loved one becomes less trivial. Love that dreams ennobles the embrace of those awake.

I love you.
